Black Cat Bar is the soul of Brunswick St, and was one of the first cafes there (depending on who you're asking, it was the first). Now with lots of alcohol and not much food. And it's clean, a turn-up on its past life. The bar is a compact place to enjoy a drink, or to dance in the compact single room with DJ on weekends. It's a great place to socialize with new friends. It's our favourite, and we put our office where we put it to be close to this bar.

The Rochester Castle's famous indie, new-wave and electro night 'Panic!' provides a cure for dance addicts and workaholics alike. If you're feeling sluggish from staring at four walls all week, 'Panic!' (every Friday) is a way to get your blood pumping again. This renovated pub is one of the few places in Melbourne where you can let it all hang out and get dancing to anti-Top 40 stuff. Expect to hear all the new-wave classics as well as hits from Britain's current new wave bands - such as Franz Ferdinand and Bloc Party.

Located in the back streets of Fitzroy for over 140 years, about 50 metres from the thriving hub that is Brunswick Street, this hidden beauty stands tall and proud as one of Melbourne’s oldest and friendliest pubs. Now open 7 days a week, the King brothers have introduced a new twist to a classic venue, with over 100 beers from here and around the world available. Come on in to sample a fine selection of ales, enjoy some wonderful cooking by the chefs, get amongst the fantastic array of live bands, or just bring a bunch of mates for a beer and a game of pool in the massive beer garden.
Many of us Fitzroy dwellers may have noticed that The Rob Roy Hotel has experienced a transformation in the last twelve months. One of the nights that is run here now on a Thursday is live music in the back room, which adds a new aspect to the pub & the pub’s culture. The night started in January of this year & since then many acts have come through the venue including The Killjoys, Philippa Nihill (ex-Underground Lovers), Matt Handley (Pollyanna), Quincy McLean & The Smooth Bastards (ex-Blue Ruin), Peter Archer (Crow) & Malcolm Hill, who many will remember as the support on the recent Nick Cave tour. The night is run as part of the Gertrude Street Sessions in conjunction with Builders Arms Hotel & like the Builders, the staff are friendly & are mostly artists or musicians from the Fitzroy area. The room holds 200 people with areas for standing or lounging & has received a warm welcome from the bands & punters with the atmosphere providing space for both relaxing & rockin’ tunes. Although the Rob Roy’s clientele has changed, the funky 70’s wallpaper has not & apart from the music, this is an aspect we are very proud of! Shows start at 9pm with the venue being open until 3am for those of us who like to kick on into the wee hours.
Yah Yah's hosts bands and DJs every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday night. We spin rock, soul, garage, surf, exotica, 60s, 70s and more. With a rotating line-up of bands and DJs playing every Thursday to Saturday, it’s the sort of setting you can imagine ending up being later being chronicled as the meeting place for next generation of Melbourne’s rock royalty. Pass by on a Friday night and the place is pumping, not bad for a venue that has been open less than three months.
For over 6 years The Stage has been home to a great diversity of world music that is uniquely Melbourne. It is one of the few venues where you can immerse yourself in a different culture thoughout the week. Regular monthly events include African dance nights, Flamenco shows, Belly dance party nights, Tango nights & of course Melbourne’s greatest Latin dance night happens every Saturday. Throughout the week dance classes are available including Cuban/Salsa on Tuesday, Argentine Tango on Wednesdays, & Latin/Salsa & Swing on Thursdays.
The Stage is also renowned for hosting non-mainstream theatre and is a regular participant in Fringe, Midsumma and other such festivals. With 2 floor levels, huge stage areas, dressing room facilities, huge dance floors, in house PA and lighting systems, The Stage is simply fantastic for theatre, launches, benefits and also functions, all of which can be fully catered.
The Stage offers casual dining with inexpensive home style Mediterranean meals on the chargrill, as well as vegetarian dishes & light snacks…whilst for group bookings set menu banquet style eating is extremely popular.
In all, The Stage provides for a diverse entertainment experience where you can wine, dine & dance all under the one roof.
While we don't have a private room, we do have plenty of areas for groups of up to 100 to take over for an afternoon or night.
When the season permits, the back yard is a ripper & there's a few lounge areas you can reserve or just meet in the bar to watch the footy.
You can buy a beer & other stuff from the bar, there are no hire fees because what you see is what you get around here. If you like the sound of Johhny Cash or any of the above ideas then get in touch or drop in for a beer after midday any day. The Commercial Club does however suggest that you celebrate your 18th Birthday at home.
